WARRANDYTE GLEE CLUB
Afternoon Glee Club Sings
Snacks and drinks from 1:30pm

GLEE CLUB GOS
I am really very sad to have to tell you that our Glee Club has finished for
now. We were so very lucky to have some of the best musical directors in
Australia take our Glee Club. I have really enjoyed it and learned heaps.
Our sincere thanks go to the very talented and generous Vicky, Simon, Karen
and Stephen who managed to fit us into their very busy schedules for so long.
It's been great and I really hope that we have a ground swell of interest so
we can run another Glee Club one day.

WARRANDYTE GLEE CLUB

Glee Club is a pacey, and fun singing session. If you like singing, then
you'll be right at home at our Glee Club. You don't have to be a really good
singer or able to read music (although being able to read the words can help
at times!) as Simon and Vicky are such good musicians, teachers and leaders
they make us sound good!

Each session commences with warm ups and the handing out of the song books.
We sing through a song while Simon plays the piano. He then helps us with a
bit of "tidying up", and throws a harmony in here and there, and we then sing
through the song. We manage a few new songs each session and we often sing
through the songs learned the previous session.

So if you've always wanted to have a sing with others, give it a go, or if
you're a seasoned singer you can help us sound even better. We are looking
forward to wonderful Sunday afternoons singing with you ......

I would like to thank Ian and Graham for generously lending us a sound
system and taking a lot of time and effort to install it. The sound system is
being put to good use by some of our performers who are appreciating the
opportunity to use backup CDs and mikes. So I now send a big thank you to Ian
and Graham for adding another dimension to the Dragonfly Club.

August Dragonfly Club saw the arrival of a truck carrying 4 large marimbas.
We had Zoe, Georgia and Stacey playing these marimbas with great energy,
enthusiasm, accuracy and mallets flying led by Graham. If you don't
already know, the marimba is a musical instrument in the percussion family. It
has wooden or metal bars like a xylophone that are struck with hand-held
mallets. The resonators underneath made out of metal, often aluminium, or
pvc piping, and in some countries they are made out of gourds. The girls who
played the marimbas for us are part of the Marimba Belles from Boronia
Heights Primary School extension program.

If you would like to hear the fantastic Marimba Belles, you can listen to a
CD of a past Marimba Belles group playing on www.cdbaby.com/cd/marimbabelles.
This album is a delightful potpourri of classical, blues, pop, boogie, folk,
renaissance, baroque, African and more. One of my favourite pieces is "Boogie
for Two". The Marimba Belles are an Australian Primary School award winning
group and I'm sure you'll be stunned and amazed at how good they are and how
great marimbas sound.

Gemma and Georgia sang after the marimba players. These girls are only 12, but
if you closed your eyes you'd think they were professional singers in their 20s.
Quite amazing!

Sandra, Silvia and Anna from Raqs Divine in Frankston, then performed a very
special dance comprised of three parts that Sandra choreographed especially
for us. Sandra wrote the following about their dance.

I have been teaching Raqs Sharqi (Egyptian Dance) for about 16 years. Dance
for me and for the many women I have taught over the years has been a powerful
healing tool and a modality of expression for those who cannot find words to
express their feelings. It has been a tool of empowerment for many women,
particularly those who have experienced violence in their lives.

When going through breast cancer treatment I could no longer dance but I would
visualise the movements which helped me greatly in my recovery. Cancer and the
treatment is an onslaught on the body and soul on many levels. The dances performed
were part of this visualisation. It is called 'Metamorphosis' showing the stages of
being in the cocoon phase at the beginning of illness, to the emergence as a glorious
butterfly. The dances are part of a healing journey, not only for myself but I
believe for many others who have been inflicted by life threatening illness or life
circumstances which have caused much pain and anguish. The cocoon phase allows
the healing to take place where nurturing and self care is important. Finally comes
the freedom and sharing when the body and soul are replenished and the soul can soar
to greater heights. The final dance is a prayer of gratitude and grace, a giving of
thanks to the higher power and life force.

The women who are part of this have been a great and wonderful support to me during
my journey. We have shared the love of dance for many years and when I was unable to
dance these wonderful women would still meet and continue to dance. Through this the
energy was held strong and it was kept alive and viable.

It was our pleasure to perform 'Metamorphosis' for you and your friends. It was performed
with much love and joy.

We are taking expressions of interest in a Belly Dance Workshop by Sandra for later
on this year. Please ring the shop (03) 9844 5155 if you are interested.

Unlike most Australian kids of her generation, Ella Thompson grew up
listening to the sounds of Donny Hathaway, Etta James and Gladys Knight
and the Pips. It was the love of soul music that made Ella want to sing.
Not concerned with fads and trends, she sings from her heart. Ella
started performing and writing songs at an early age, and is only now
19 years old. Having done her first 'proper gig' at 12, she has had
experience well beyond her years.

After touring the country with Renee Geyer, Paul Kelly, Diesel,
supporting Stax legend Mavis Staples and playing major festivals, she
went to LA and New York last year for a forthcoming album. During her
travels Ella met and worked with some incredible artists including
Denise Rich. Ella has also appeared on television shows such as "It
Takes Two" and "Rockwiz" and is quickly gaining credibility as a
promising young artist. She has recorded several EPs of her original
material, including her self-titled EP, which was released through
Amphead Music in 2008. In 2009 Ella is set to release her mini-album
"Only Of You" through Medici studios. "Only of You" features seven
new original tracks with modern R'n'B sounds to Old Soul grooves.

Her band features Australia's best R'n'B musicians, and her mini-album
was co-produced by Jason Heerah, Gary Pinto and Dion Hirini. Ella has
a refreshing take on soul music that we have been waiting to hear...

"Ella sings new soul, like an old soul" Paul Kelly "Amazing" Renee Geyer.

Karen from Hills of Plenty Winery Yarrambat, and John from Buckley's
Beers, Healesville will also be selling their beautiful beverages on
